Storage and Handling
- Keep it cool and dark. Sodium hypochlorite slowly breaks down into salt and oxygen, and heat and sunlight speed this up a lot. Store it in a shaded, ventilated area, ideally below 25 °C.
- Use it fresh. Higher concentrations lose strength faster. Plan deliveries so stock is used within a few weeks to a few months, and rotate first-in, first-out.
- Use the right tanks. Store in vented HDPE, FRP or lined tanks. Avoid ordinary metals, which corrode and also speed up decomposition.
- Never mix it with acids or ammonia. Acids release toxic chlorine gas, and ammonia forms toxic chloramines. Keep it separate from acids such as sulfuric acid in storage and spill bunds.
